Center for Imaging of Neurodegenerative Diseases

High Field MRI Physicist

The University of California, San Francisco seeks an MR physicist for brain spectroscopy and imaging research in the Center for Imaging of Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIND) in the Department of Radiology at the SF VA Medical Center. The candidate will be appointed at the Assistant Professor level in the Adjunct series.

The position’s focus is on the development of new MR spectroscopic acquisition methods for detection of brain metabolites at 4 Tesla and the development of novel spectral analysis techniques.  The successful applicant will be expected to further advance specialized methods for detection of J-coupled metabolites and is expected to be familiar with state-of-the-art RF pulse design and spectroscopic analysis methods for clinical research at high magnetic fields. Furthermore, the candidate should show keen interest in the development of new, high field MRI acquisition methods and novel MRI reconstruction and analysis methods. These methods will be integrated by the successful candidate into large clinical studies, including multi-site studies, of epilepsy, normal aging, dementias, substance abuse, and other neurodegenerative diseases.  In accordance with UCSF policies, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program related to the metabolic characterization of neurodegenerative diseases and to secure extramural funding. The candidate is also expected to actively engage in teaching as well as university and public service, consistent with university policy.

The candidate should have a Ph.D. in physics, physical chemistry, engineering or equivalent fields. The ideal candidate has a solid background in NMR physics, especially spectroscopy, signal detection and processing theory, and hands-on experience in pulse sequence development, preferably within the Siemens IDEA programming environment. Experience in other modular and functional computer languages, including C, C++, Matlab and IDL is essential.

Applicants should send a CV and a statement of research interests by July 31, 2008 and should arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to Dr. Dieter J. Meyerhoff, CIND, by email to Dieter.Meyerhoff@ucsf.edu or by fax to 415.668.2864.
